１９９９年１１月２２日午後、航空自衛隊入間基地所属のＴ３３型ジェット練習機が入間川河川敷に墜落しました。
その際、東京電力の高圧送電線を切断し、東京・埼玉の約８０万世帯で停電となりました。
電線切断による停電は都市のもろさの再認識となり、マスコミの論調は私の知る限り「税金の無駄使い」的な、冷淡なものであったと思います。

ところが私の属する「フォーラム」で別な観点の紹介がありました。

当日のニュースステーションで（私は普段テレビをほとんど見ず、この番組も見ていませんが）
国際コンサルタントの岡本さんという人が出演しており事故のお詫びをする防衛庁長官の画像についてコメントを求められ、
「私の事務所でも停電のためにコンピュータが止まり、大いに迷惑はしているが、
今の報道を見ると、脱出用パラシュートも開かぬままとなっており、脱出のチャンスを失ってまで、住宅地への墜落を回避した可能性が高い。
であれば、パイロットの行為は人間の尊厳に満ちたものであり、にも関わらず、まず、この行為に対して、長官が哀悼の意を表しなかったとすれば、
ご遺族の方々は、何と思うだろうか、誠に遺憾である」
と語ったそうです。
（実際には防衛庁長官は会見で、亡くなったパイロットへの、哀悼の意を表したそうです。報道の編集作業の恐さですね。
報道には必ず「誤報」があります。意図したもの、せぬものがあるでしょう。しかしそれ以上に恐ろしいのは「編集」です。簡単には「強調」と「省略」です。）
